Five Things You Need To Take Care Of Before Traveling

1/12/2009

Vacations take a lot of time to plan. From looking for the perfect hotel to getting the best deals on airfares, cruises, researching on the activities once you get to your destination and most important of all, budgeting. But while you're busy planning for everything you need to do once you get there, one must take into account all the things that need to be taken cared of once you're gone.

Yes, there is still more planning and arrangements to do. Your plant and your pets can't take care of themselves while you're gone. So here are some important things that you need to consider and arrange before going on that vacation.

1. Pets and plants. If you have a pet that you won't take along the vacation, make arrangements for someone to take care of it. Maybe that sweet old lady next door, your sister or if not, hire someone to do the baby sitting. For your green friends, ask someone that you trust to go visit your home everyday and water your plants for you. But just be very careful; don't just give your keys to anyone you know. Give that task to a family member, if not, a very close friend whom you really trust.

2. Make sure you have the go signal from your work to go on that vacation. Some people are so excited on planning for a vacation that once they see a good deal, they purchase it immediately, without considering if they are allowed to go on vacation leave from work in the first place. This would spell disaster. Good thing if you purchased a refundable ticket (which is most of the time available for business or fist class tickets only), but if not, then be ready to kiss that money goodbye.

Most airlines and hotels have very strict cancellation or change policies. So if you have done this and need to cancel your trip, cancel it as soon as you can. Most airlines have a 24 hour window for a full refund of a non-refundable ticket and most hotels have lesser penalties when reservations are cancelled at an earlier time.

3. Travel Insurance. If you have travel insurance, read on its policies and see what the specific coverage are. Some insurance only include lost baggage and medical emergencies on your part. It would be preferred to look for ones that would cover your immediate family – especially in instances where you have to go home due to a family member getting sick. Of course, bear in mind that you would need to provide medical documentation of such incidents and that would still be under the discretion of the insurance company.

4. Give a copy of your tickets, passports and full travel details to someone you can trust at home. Should anything go wrong, your family would know where exactly to find you and could present evidences that you have traveled to that specific destination.

5. Check weather news on the dates of your travel. You wouldn't want to spend a fortune on a trip to the Bahamas and when you get there, it turns out to be typhoon season.

So remember, plan ahead and settle everything at work and at home before leaving. After you come home from vacation, you'll be ensured that everything in your home and work is as good as you've left them.
